Barriers break while celebrating Women’s Day at ERDF

Women who clean and sweep the floors in the university building and those who guide research scholars sat side by side at the function to mark International Women’s Day at the University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM). Women who have shown exemplary quality in their work during the year 2014-15 were honoured at the international Women’s Day event which was participated by over 150 women personnel.
 

Welcoming the audience, Shamim Goney, Deputy Registrar (Admin) USTM said, “The University has chalked out a series of programmes focussing on women's empowermnent on the backdrop of International Women's Day celebrated on March 8 every year. This programme in USTM would not be a one day affair but will last the entire year and ever after.”
 

M. Hoque, Chairman of ERD Foundation informed that on the occasion of International Women’s Day the University is honouring the efforts of women by highlighting their achievements in diverse fields and activities in the University. A traditional gamosa, certificate, and gifts were handed over to five cleanliness staff - Regina Marak, Himani Rabha, Relima Sangma, Martina Marak, and Munu Kalita. Similarly, Dipty Nath Bania, Nurse; Prisca Sakhwa, Section Officer; and Muslima Khanam, Academic Officer were chosen for the honour from among miscellaneous personnel. In the field of academics, Krishna Sarma, Associate Professor; Nazia Rahman, HoD i/c (ME) RIST; Chandrali Sharma, Assistant Professor (ME) RIST; Barnali Sharma, Assistant Professor, Sociology USTM; Dr Parbin Sultana, Assistant professor (Statistics) USTM; Dr Ranee Das, Professor (Life Sciences) USTM; and Rashmi Rekha Barua, Assistant Professor (Management Sc) USTM were the recipients of honour on the occasion.
 

Dr Alaka Desai Sarma, Dean, Students Welfare USTM was given the International Women’s Day Excellence Award for her outstanding contribution to women’s empowerment in USTM. In her response to the honour, Dr Sarma said, “All around the world, International Women's Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality. Make It Happen is the 2015 theme for International Women’s Day this year, encouraging effective action for advancing and recognising women.”
 

Dr PG Rao, Vice Chancellor, USTM also addressed the gathering on the occasion.
