USTM conferred Honorary
D. Sc to Prof. Darlando Khathing

In an overwhelming ceremonial Convocation 2017, University
of Science and Technology Meghalaya conferred Honorary
Doctorate of Science (HONORIS CAUSA) to Prof. Darlando Khathing,
the son of late Maj. Bob Khathing and late Mrs Klerisnorah
Lyngdoh Khathing. The honor was conferred by Shri Mahbubul Hoque,
Hon’ble Chancellor, USTM and Chairman, ERD Foundation in the
presence of other dignitaries namely Prof. M Jagadesh Kumar,
Hon’ble VC, JNU, Prof. Jayant M Modak, Dy. Director, IISC,
Bangalore, Prof. G.D Sharma, Hon’ble VC, Bilaspur University,
Dr. P G Rao, Hon'ble VC, USTM, Dr. R K Sharma, Pro -VC, USTM,
Prof. Amarjyoti Chaudhry, C V Raman Char Professor, USTM and
many other distinguished guests, intellectuals, academic experts
across North East.
The 3rd Convocation had been another historic moment for USTM as
a total number of 905 students which includes 744 at the PG
level, 161 at the UG level and 2 Ph.D scholars, had received
degrees. 26 students had received gold medals out of which 17 at
the PG level and 9 at the UG level.
Sh. Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, USTM clarified “Prof. Khating is
a man of science, rather Nuclear Physics and it is a privilege
for USTM being the first State Private University, dedicated to
dissemination of knowledge on science and technology, innovation
and research, to confer this Honorary Doctorate of Science to
Prof. Khating”. Also, he belongs to North East and held the
position of first Vice Chancellor of Central University of
Jharkhand from North East. This is just a token gesture of USTM
to recognize such a man of stature whose research work had
greatly contributed for the development of North East Region in
particular and nation as a whole. Prof. Khating after receiving
the degree urged that the students must be honest and then only
their goals and aspirations will be achieved.
Noteworthy to mention, Dr. Darlando Khathing maintained a
consistently good academic career (1st class throughout) and was
trained in top institutions of the country like St. Edmund’s
Shillong, St. Stephen’s Delhi and Bose Institute Kolkata. He was
awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Trust Fellowship (UK) and
was attached to the Atomic Energy Research Establishment,
Oxfordshire, England. Dr. Khathing was retired as a Professor of
Physics at the North-Eastern Hill University. He had
successfully completed over twenty major research projects as
the Principal Investigator, eight PhD and three M.Phil scholars
had successfully been awarded degrees under his direct
supervision. Dr. Khathing is a life member of many national
scientific societies namely Electron Microscope Society of
India, National Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Society, Indian
Assoc. of Analytical Scientists, Indian Physics Association,
Indian Assoc of Physics Teachers, Indian Science Congress,
Indian and International Society of Radiation Physics, etc.
